Kath’s project, crossing commercial Australian wool breed rams on Targhee ewes, started in 1986 with a Polwarth ram. We liked the offspring but it was hard to get Polwarth rams, so we switched to finer woolled Cormo rams from Heinrich Ortmann. We breed our 6 year-old registered Targhee ewes to pureblood Cormo rams and the ½ blood ewes go into our commercial herd. Some of the half-blood rams are sold and others are kept and bred to our first lamb ewes. This year we have ten yearling ewes that are from the registered Targhee ewes bred to a purebred Cormo ram, and ten yearling ewes that are from our first-lamb-ewes bred to CormoXTarghee rams. We have found these crosses to be very hardy on the range and good mothers
