Kathryn McRae began adding Australian wool bloodlines to her commercial Targhees in 1986 with the purchase of a Polwarth ram from Australia. Several years later she began using Cormo rams from Heinrich Ortmann. The Polwarth and Cormo are equivalent to a Targhee.
Kathryn breeds the 6-year-old registered Targhee ewes, about 25, from McRae Brothers’ Targhees to a Cormo ram. The ranch uses a few of the half-blood rams and neighbors purchase the rest. These ewes are 3/4 TargheeX1/4 Cormo and are out of registered Targhee ewes and a half-blood ram that came back from the neighbor for an early fall visit in 2016. Their wether counterparts sold at 75 days weighing 86 pounds. Ewes were born in mid-March 2017 and sheared in May. The ranch’s wool microned 20.4 and yielded 61.5% this year.
